RACK & PINION: A rack and pinion steering system can best be illustrated here. The rack and pinion steering system is a simple yet effective way to turn the wheels of the car. As you turn the steering wheel, the pinion gear at the end of the steering shaft engages the gearing along the rack. The rack then moves from side to side through the tie rods and steering arms to move the wheels in the intended direction. There is no real maintenance you can do on your rack and pinion steering except periodically check for worn boots or looseness at the tie rods.
